Champions League Showdown: PSG vs. Liverpool Show Anticipation Amid Mixed Form
Paris (France) (AFP) – In the buildup to a high-stakes Champions League quarter-final clash, Paris Saint-Germain’s midfield maestro Vitinha has emphasized the need for caution against Liverpool, despite the English club’s recent struggle on the pitch. As the two football giants prepare to meet at the Parc des Princes, expectations run high.

Liverpool’s Consistency Questioned
As PSG gears up for the first leg of this exciting Champions League tie, Vitinha was quick to remind journalists that Liverpool must never be underestimated. “Liverpool are Liverpool, even if they are not in ideal form. They are still a great team,” he stated on Tuesday, casting a shadow of doubt on expectations heading into the match. He also acknowledged the significance of the encounter, adding, “It will be a great match here, and at Anfield, and tomorrow we will need to be at 100 percent. It will still be a very, very difficult game.”
Last Year’s Classic Revisited
The upcoming match marks a repeat of last year’s dramatic Champions League last-16 clash between these two sides. In that encounter, Liverpool triumphed 1-0 in Paris, only for PSG to secure a similar 1-0 victory at Anfield and advance by winning on penalties. Paris Saint-Germain, eventually, went on to lift the prestigious trophy, while Liverpool clinched the Premier League title.
Despite Liverpool’s recent string of poor performances—including a heavy 4-0 loss to Manchester City in the FA Cup—Vitinha expressed confidence in his team’s ability to succeed against the Merseysiders, comparing the current circumstances with the tension-filled matches from last season. “There was a bit of frustration in the first match. I don’t remember Liverpool having a chance apart from the goal they scored at the end. We played well and yet we still lost,” he recalled.
New Faces and Key Absences
A notable addition to Liverpool’s lineup this year is Hugo Ekitike, the France striker who had an unremarkable 18-month spell with PSG. Now thriving at Liverpool, Ekitike is the team’s top scorer with 17 goals this season. “Hugo is a fantastic guy. I enjoyed the year I spent with him,” said Vitinha. “You could see the quality he had even if it wasn’t the right context for him.”
On PSG’s part, coach Luis Enrique confirmed that the team will miss two key players: Spain’s Fabian Ruiz, who is sidelined due to a knee injury, and winger Bradley Barcola, who despite returning to training, is not yet match-ready. “Fabian has not yet trained with the squad, so how can he play?” Enrique said of Ruiz.
Setting the Stage for an Epic Battle
With the stakes as high as they can get, both teams are aware that last year’s narratives will not define this matchup. Enrique pointedly remarked, “It is impossible to say one team is the favourite. Last year everyone said Liverpool were the favourites, and the team that went through was Paris Saint-Germain.”
As the clock ticks down to the highly anticipated match, fans and analysts are eagerly awaiting what promises to be another thrilling chapter in the ongoing saga between these monumental clubs.
