Johnnie Walker’s AfroExchange Creative Summit: A Cultural Milestone in Africa

On April 11, 2026, Africa’s creative landscape underwent a transformative experience at the Johnnie Walker AfroExchange Creative Summit, held at The Forum in Bryanston. This groundbreaking event showcased the remarkable potential of African artistry, bringing together established and emerging talents to collaboratively shape the future of the continent’s creative ecosystem.

A Gathering of Creative Forces

Unlike many summits that often just talk about intentions, the AfroExchange Creative Summit was a tangible gathering where participants actively created and exchanged ideas. The summit was designed to foster collaboration, enabling creatives from all stages to share knowledge and innovate together. The culmination was a collective display of co-created artwork, along with valuable insights gained through various panel discussions, fireside chats, and interactive tutorials.

Celebrating African Creativity

The overarching theme of the summit was the assertion that Africa is not just an emerging market in creativity but a foundational hub for global cultural movements. This concept was illustrated through engaging co-creation labs and dynamic panel discussions, enabling participants to witness firsthand the impact of collaborative artistry.

“The Johnnie Walker AfroExchange Creative Summit was an opportunity to bring together the creative force that keeps walking towards collective progress.” — Ifeoma Agu, Head of Culture at Diageo SWC

Highlights of the Day

MCs Naledi Mallela and Kabelo Moremi expertly guided the day’s activities, ensuring a seamless flow through varied segments. The opening session featured a fireside chat between Colin Gayle, CEO of Africa Creative Agency, and Ifeoma Agu, who discussed the vital conditions for African talent to transition into global prominence. Their conversation emphasized the necessity of genuine ambition rather than mere performance.

Insightful Panel Discussions

The panel discussions, moderated by George Avakian and Ayandamantombazane Mhlongo, gathered significant voices from South Africa’s creative scene. They explored the current state of African creativity and highlighted key responsibilities in driving its future. Music panelists such as Thandi Draai, Lelowhatsgood, and Kat Upendi contributed insights, while art panelists Andile Dlamini, TK Mahapa, and Khensani Mohlatole joined in thoughtful dialogue.

Dynamic Co-Creation Labs

The summit featured parallel streams in the Co-Creation Labs. Each lab offered hands-on experiences:

  • Fashion Lab: Led by Khensani Mohlatole, participants explored African textiles creatively.
  • Art Lab: Facilitated by Njabulo Hlophe, guests expressed personal interpretations of the theme “Keep Walking.”
  • Music Lab: MUZI guided attendees through music-making processes, bringing them closer to the art form.
  • DJ Labs: Participants learned to energize the dancefloor with effective mixing techniques.
  • Mixology Labs: Guests crafted their own cocktails, featuring Johnnie Walker’s exceptional whisky as a highlight.

An Artistic Showcase

Throughout the day, artist SK Original created a stunning piece inspired by Johnnie Walker, employing his signature crackle technique on glass. Guests indulged in a range of cocktails inspired by various African cuisines, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Closing Celebrations

The evening wrapped up with DJ sets from Kat Upendi and Lelowhatsgood culminating in a live performance by Kamo Mphela. This vibrant finale captured the spirit of the day, celebrating the creative efforts and exchanges that had taken place.

“Keep Walking signifies more than just ambition; it embodies a mindful approach to navigating life, creativity, and consumption.” — Ifeoma Agu

Focus on Responsible Enjoyment

The AfroExchange Creative Summit also emphasized the importance of responsible enjoyment. Johnnie Walker integrated this principle with every facet of the event, from the curated drinks experience to educational resources like DrinkIQ, which provides guests with evidence-based information about alcohol and responsible consumption.

At the summit, attendees were encouraged to enjoy Johnnie Walker Black Label with mindfulness, embracing the intention and craft encapsulated within each glass.
