Egypt’s Renewable Energy Initiatives: President El-Sisi’s Strategic Meeting

According to Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy, the Spokesman for the Presidency, the meeting focused on evaluating the ongoing new and renewable energy projects in Egypt. Discussions revolved around the targeted capacities to be integrated into the national electricity grid from wind, solar energy, and battery storage systems in alignment with Egypt’s 2030 energy strategy.
Enhancing Energy Capacity
Minister Mahmoud Esmat announced that by 2026, 2,500 megawatts of renewable energy are slated for addition to the unified grid. This expansion is expected to bolster the sustainability and reliability of Egypt’s national electricity system. The minister highlighted ongoing efforts to improve production efficiency and lessen reliance on fossil fuels, aiming for renewable sources to account for at least 42% of the energy mix by 2030.
Petroleum Sector Updates
In parallel discussions, Minister Karim Badawi detailed the ministry’s initiatives to settle the financial obligations of companies operating in Egypt, particularly in adherence to President El-Sisi’s directive to clear all arrears by June 2026. He also shared insights into the latest oil and gas discoveries and the upcoming exploration plans for 2026.
Strategic Energy Mix
President El-Sisi emphasized the importance of a well-calculated expansion in renewable energy initiatives while minimizing the reliance on traditional fuels. His vision is for Egypt to emerge as a leading regional hub for green energy.
Additionally, the President directed collaboration between the Ministries of Electricity, Renewable Energy, Petroleum, and Finance to expedite the introduction of new clean energy capacities while securing necessary funding for stability in the national grid.

During the meeting, strategies were also discussed for tackling the *implications of regional developments* on electricity supply.
