Chicken Reigns Supreme in South Africa’s Fast Food Market
A recent report by Eighty20 reveals that chicken is the top choice among fast food lovers in South Africa, outpacing other options like pizza and burgers. The Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) sector highlights chicken as the favored meal, with consumers flocking to chains like Chicken Licken and KFC.
Market Trends: Chicken vs. Pizza
According to the data from Eighty20, consumers are twice as likely to dine at chicken-focused restaurants compared to those that offer pizza. “Chicken’s popularity is not just about affordability; it is strongly influenced by cultural preferences within South Africa,” noted Andrew Fulton, Director at Eighty20. Pizza maintains a solid second position due to its widespread presence and competitive pricing strategies.
Consumer Statistics
Approximately 22 million individuals reported visiting chicken-based QSRs over the past year, while nearly 11 million opted for pizza establishments. Burgers follow closely as the third most popular choice, attracting about 10 million customers.
The Popularity of KFC
In 2023, KFC emerged as South Africa’s most frequented fast-food chain, drawing around 10 million patrons in just four weeks. Eighty20’s MAPS consumption data underscores a strong link between chicken consumption and lower-income demographics, who, despite limited dining out, consistently choose chicken when they do indulge.
Pizza’s Growing Appeal

Pizza’s attraction can be linked to family dynamics, resonating particularly with young families and couples in their 20s and 30s. Interestingly, divorcees are among the demographic most associated with pizza consumption.
Financial Performance of Pizza Brands
The rising popularity of pizza in South Africa has been notably influenced by the strong market presence of Debonairs Pizza. In 2025, the brand reported a revenue increase to R8.28 billion and a 12.6% rise in operating profits, with plans for additional restaurant openings underway.
Valued Growth in Pizza Market
Valued at around USD 1.89 billion in 2024, South Africa’s pizza market is projected to expand to USD 2.86 billion by 2033. This growth is primarily driven by frozen pizza sales, which dominate the market share.
The Competitive Landscape
Interestingly, the South African pizza scene has seen shifts in major players. While international giants like Domino’s Pizza exited in 2020, Scooters Pizza has made a comeback, recently opening a new store in Rosebank, Johannesburg.
South African Pizza on the Global Stage
South African pizzas are receiving international accolades. Notably, Kitchener’s Pizzeria in Johannesburg ranked 6th globally on Time Out Travel’s list for its unique Pepperoni and Hot Honey Pizza.
“Pizza is thriving in South Africa’s competitive fast-food atmosphere. As dining preferences continue to shift, this Italian dish has undoubtedly secured its place in the culinary landscape of the Rainbow Nation,” Fulton added.
