SRK Consulting: Pioneering Sustainable Growth in Zambia’s Mining Sector
Independent global consultancy SRK Consulting is enhancing its presence in Zambia as a key sponsor of the 13th edition of the Zambian International Mining and Energy Conference (ZIMEC). The event, set to take place in Kitwe, will feature a pre-conference workshop on March 24 to introduce SRK Consulting (Zambia), showcasing its extensive mining expertise to potential clients. This year’s ZIMEC theme focuses on promoting responsible investment and partnerships to foster the sustainable growth of Zambia’s mining and energy sectors.
Desmond Mossop, partner and principal engineering geologist at SRK Consulting (South Africa), emphasizes the Zambian government’s renewed commitment to accelerate copper production and further mineral exploration. Key discussions between the Ministry of Mines and the Zambian Geological Survey Department aim to forge beneficial partnerships between investors and operators.
With a transparent mining cadastre and critical legislation like the Minerals Regulation Commission Act, the Zambian government is proactively managing the country’s mineral resources. Notably, high-resolution aerial surveys have already covered 60% of Zambia, marking a significant advance from 40% assessed just a year earlier.
Delivering Essential Technical Expertise
SRK Consulting’s longstanding connection with Zambia enables it to provide a comprehensive range of mining and related services vital to the country’s expansion phase. Recent issues related to tailings storage facilities underline the necessity for advanced technical management in mining operations.
“Our geology, geotechnical, civils, water, mining, and foundation engineering teams support the entire mining lifecycle from exploration to the eventual decommissioning, including the management of tailings,” stated Mossop.
The consultancy employs proprietary software to enhance exploration targeting, allowing investors to make informed decisions regarding mineral deposits.
A crucial part of SRK’s strategy involves collaborating with Copper Belt University in Kitwe, fostering local skill development and aligning with initiatives the firm has executed globally.
Driving Beneficiation Initiatives
The issue of mineral beneficiation has been paramount across Africa, and Zambia is no exception. The government is forming partnerships, particularly with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), to maximize the value extracted from raw minerals prior to exportation. Locally, initiatives to promote the production of copper cables and explore green energy opportunities for electrical battery production are underway, with localization legislation further driving investments.
Addressing Energy Vulnerabilities
However, Zambia faces challenges related to inconsistent energy supply. National energy company ZESCO is taking steps to stabilize the power infrastructure, and mining operators are encouraged to pursue energy independence. A collaboration called the Green Copper Accord between ZESCO, GreenCo, and First Quantum Minerals aims to secure essential energy supplies from South Africa for mining and residential sectors.
“SRK is equipped to assist in mitigating Zambia’s energy deficiencies and offers technical support for companies seeking energy independence, conducting environmental-compliant civil geotechnical assessments for solar farm constructions,” said Able Tunono, a geotechnical engineer based in Zambia.
Emerging Trends: AI and Big Data in Mining
The evolving landscape of mining technology is characterized by the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data. Advanced AI applications in exploration, along with enhanced data collection from drone and satellite technologies, are significantly enriching exploration data availability.
Robust political frameworks, comprehensive legislation, and increased investments are pivotal in the growth trajectory of Zambia’s mining sector. With expertise from firms like SRK Consulting, Zambia is shifting from a traditional mineral producer to a frontrunner in future minerals such as cobalt, lithium, manganese, and uranium.
“In the new ‘gold rush’ for these high-demand resources, Zambia is firmly committed to fostering responsible investment and partnerships for sustainable development. SRK wholeheartedly supports this vision and anticipates a fruitful engagement at ZIMEC 2026 and beyond,” said Mossop.
Engagement at ZIMEC 2026
The multidisciplinary team from SRK Consulting South Africa will be present at ZIMEC on March 25 and 26 at stand number 58. Mossop expressed that SRK aligns closely with ZIMEC’s objectives and looks forward to collaborating with stakeholders to drive responsible investment in Zambia’s mining and energy sectors.
“ZIMEC provides an invaluable forum for discussions aimed at advancing Zambia’s mining sector,” he added. “We are eager to engage in meaningful dialogues about addressing technical challenges and potential solutions for the industry’s future.”
