The Legacy of Step Afrika!

Founded by C. Brian Williams in December 1994, Step Afrika! has emerged as the premier authority on the art of stepping, a vibrant dance form with roots in African American culture. For over 30 years, Williams has dedicated his life to sharing this remarkable art form with audiences worldwide.

Understanding Stepping

During a recent stop on the Evolution Tour, C. Brian Williams explained the essence of stepping to an interested young audience. "It’s a percussive style of dance where our bodies act as both dancers and instruments,” he noted, highlighting the historical significance of this dance style, which originated from Black fraternities and sororities.

Williams connects stepping’s heritage to a broader history, claiming its roots trace back to the arrival of Africans in America in the 1500s. His personal journey in stepping began at Howard University while pledging his fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, deepening his appreciation for cultural expression.

A Cultural Connection

For Williams, stepping transcends mere performance—it serves as a means of cultural preservation. "Whenever you see the art form of stepping, you’re witnessing a cultural memory," he explains. Through each movement, performers pass down traditions and reinforce their heritage, emphasizing the strong link to the Divine Nine, the nine historically Black Greek-letter organizations.

“Many members of Step Afrika! belong to these organizations,” Williams adds, illustrating the deep-rooted connections within the company.

Community Outreach and Education

Step Afrika! is committed not only to performing but also to educating younger generations. “Our dancers are incredible teaching artists, going into K–12 schools to share cultural experiences,” Williams shares. This dedication to community engagement will continue during their upcoming performance in Flint on March 8 at the Whiting Auditorium—a significant return for the company.
