Step Afrika! Brings the Energetic Art of Stepping to Altoona
Discovering the Vibrant History of Stepping
ALTOONA, Pa. — The unique performance art known as stepping combines rhythm, movement, and storytelling. Originating as a form of communication within the African American community, Step Afrika! is an internationally renowned dance company that recently showcased this dynamic art form at Penn State Altoona. The free performance was part of Black History Month, capturing the attention and admiration of a diverse audience.
What is Stepping?
Stepping is characterized by energetic movements that include stomping, clapping, and snapping. These elements are not only entertaining but serve to tell stories, express emotions, and foster community connections. According to dancer Jayden King, stepping evolved as African American students began attending colleges in greater numbers. “They started to form their own organizations, like fraternities and sororities. They would dance in lines or circles and sing chants, which is the foundation of stepping."
The Roots and Evolution of Step Afrika!
Founded in 1994 by C. Brian Williams, Step Afrika! has gained popularity through tours across the United States and around the world. The group not only performs paid shows but also emphasizes educational outreach. Dancer Jerod Coleman shared his personal journey with stepping, “I started stepping in fifth grade… my sister would teach me choreography she learned at Spelman College.”
Celebrating Culture Through Dance
Stepping is deeply rooted in African American culture, drawing inspiration from various contemporary dance forms while reflecting the history of its origins. Fueled by the desire to communicate across language barriers, this art form utilizes clapping and stomping as a universal means of expression.
Coleman, who has a background in education, emphasizes the importance of teaching the history behind stepping. “We showcase the similarities from other cultures that may not have known about each other until they come together through dance,” he noted. This cultural exchange enriches the stepping experience, revealing its global significance.
International Inspiration and Connections
Recently, the group traveled to Johannesburg, immersing themselves in the local culture and gaining inspiration from African trends. Coleman remarked, “Initially, it felt like just dancing, but I realized how deeply rooted it is in their culture.” This understanding transformed their performances into profound expressions of individual stories and collective history.
A Unified Community Through Dance
"I’ve been dancing for 14 years, and Step Afrika! has become a new family for me," King mentioned. The ensemble strives to showcase the love for dance and cultural diversity to audiences worldwide, emphasizing unity and community. “Stepping showcases our heart and core,” Coleman stated. “It brings various cultures together through the universal language of music.”
