Jazz in the City 2026: A New Era of Jazz Festivals in Cape Town
As Cape Town gears up for Jazz Week in March 2026, a fresh wave of excitement is set to engulf the Inner City. Jazz in the City 2026 promises to redefine the jazz festival experience by transforming a six-block stretch of Bree Street into a vibrant, walkable music circuit for one night only on Thursday, March 26.
The Concept Behind Jazz in the City
Powered by FNB Speedpoint and backed by Heineken and the City of Cape Town, Jazz in the City serves as a street-level alternative to the larger international jazz festivals in the area. It invites attendees to experience jazz in unique urban spaces — from galleries and bars to wine bars and public plazas, highlighting the city’s vibrant cultural landscape.
Bree Street Jazz Hop
This immersive festival experience, known as the Bree Street Jazz Hop, includes ten different venues and pop-up performance areas. Audiences can enjoy both ticketed and free performances, fostering an atmosphere that encourages exploration and movement throughout the night.
Community and Economic Growth
Alderman JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, emphasized the importance of cultural events in enhancing community ties and stimulating economic growth. “Events like Jazz in the City promote social cohesion while allowing residents and visitors to enjoy music in a distinct setting,” he notes.
Support for Placemaking
The festival is supported by The Mission for Inner City Cape Town as part of its urban regeneration strategy. Tim Harris, co-founder of The Mission, highlighted jazz’s role in activating public spaces, stating that a bustling city atmosphere supports inclusivity and economic vibrancy.
A Unique Festival Experience
Jazz in the City isn’t just another one-stage festival; it is a multidimensional jazz encounter that allows the city itself to become the stage.
