Jon Rahm has responded to comments made by Rory McIlroy regarding the upcoming LIV Golf event in South Africa. Rahm’s unexpected move to LIV Golf in 2023 has surprised many in the golf community, and he is preparing to take part in the imminent tournament. However, McIlroy recently hinted that Rahm might be less enthusiastic about competing in South Africa.
McIlroy Questions Rahm’s Enthusiasm
This week, McIlroy expressed his perspective on the evolving dynamics between players affiliated with LIV Golf and those aligned with traditional tours. Known for being a staunch critic of LIV Golf, the Northern Irish golfer has consistently defended the PGA Tour since LIV’s inception in 2022. His concerns stem from potential disruptions that LIV might bring to professional golf.
“I’m sure Jon (Rahm) doesn’t want to go to South Africa next week, but he’s going there,” McIlroy stated.
McIlroy’s comments coincided with growing complications in Rahm’s relationship with the DP World Tour. Recent reports have emerged suggesting that Rahm has declined certain stipulations regarding his eligibility for European events, raising doubts about his participation in future tournaments on that circuit.
Rahm Excited for South Africa
In response to McIlroy’s remarks, Rahm clarified his eagerness to compete in South Africa. The 31-year-old emphasized that LIV Golf events offer a markedly different atmosphere compared to conventional tournaments. LIV Golf is known for its lively ambiance, featuring music and entertainment that create a more relaxed environment than the typically quieter PGA Tour.
“Everything I know about South African fans tells me that it’s going to be rowdy. They know how to have fun which makes it a lot more fun for all of us,” Rahm remarked ahead of the event next week. “I’ve seen some pictures of the course… It’s a much more lively ground. People can enjoy themselves even if they aren’t golf fans, so I recommend attending for anyone.”

Rahm will join numerous other prominent players at the LIV Golf event in South Africa, scheduled for March 19 to March 22, 2026. The tournament will feature notable stars such as Cameron Smith, Bryson DeChambeau, and local favorite Louis Oosthuizen. Oosthuizen will compete representing his LIV Golf team, Stinger GC, composed entirely of South African players, adding an exciting layer of competition to the event.
