Botselo Mills: Pioneering Food Security in South Africa
Situated in the heart of Delareyville, North West, Botselo Mills is a family-operated enterprise making significant strides in enhancing South Africa’s food security. Since its inception in 1982, the company has transformed remarkably, evolving from a small maize delivery operation to a nationwide maize production powerhouse.
A Remarkable Growth Journey
Botselo Mills initially began its journey by delivering maize to local farmers with just a single bakkie. Fast forward to today, and the firm now supplies over 120 tons of maize each month to more than 1,176 Shoprite and Usave stores throughout the nation. The company has showcased astounding growth, boasting a revenue increase of over 8,000% in just four years.
Key Partnerships Driving Success
The pivotal moment in Botselo Mills’ journey occurred in 2022 when they met with the Shoprite Group. Recognizing the mill’s potential for national supply, the partnership challenged Botselo to scale operations significantly. CEO Fanie Schoeman recalled, “They challenged us to supply on a national scale, and we were left with no option but to deliver.”
Initially operating as Batho Bothle in a modest converted farm shed near Stella, the company relocated to Delareyville in 2008 and rebranded as Botselo Mills. Major investments in infrastructure and packaging marked this transition, which laid the groundwork for a national presence.
Nationwide Distribution and Community Support
Thanks to the alliance with the Shoprite Group, Botselo Mills has established a robust distribution network from Cape Town to Musina, ensuring that affordable, quality maize is accessible nationwide. Louis du Plessis, Deputy General Manager for Food Buying at Shoprite, emphasizes the partnership’s benefits: “Botselo Mills was well positioned to grow beyond its regional base, exposing its brand to more households across the country.”
Economic Impact on the Local Community
Botselo Mills is deeply integrated into the Delareyville community, employing 563 individuals, with most residing nearby. Over the past 15 years, the workforce has expanded by nearly 300%, directly contributing to local economic growth. The company’s presence has spurred development, leading to the establishment of a local bank branch and an on-site clinic providing essential healthcare services.
Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation
Schoeman underscored Botselo Mills’ dedication to community welfare, stating, “Our work is intertwined with the town’s wellbeing; what’s good for the community is good for us, and vice versa.” The company actively supports local schools, crèches, churches, and care homes, reaffirming its commitment to social responsibility.
Innovation also plays a critical role in Botselo Mills’ operations. Recently, the company launched a 2.5kg brick pack, designed to replace traditional plastic bags, enhancing packaging efficiency. A similar initiative for their Super White Instant 1kg product is also in the pipeline. “Sustainability remains central to our operations, focusing on responsible local sourcing, eco-friendly packaging, and minimizing environmental impact,” concluded Schoeman.
A Journey from Humble Beginnings to National Success
From its modest beginnings with second-hand equipment, Botselo Mills has emerged as a national success story grounded in family values and community collaboration. With the backing of Shoprite, the company is poised for further expansion of distribution and operations, continuing its mission to provide affordable staples to families across South Africa.
