Nigeria Transfers Headquarters of African Energy Bank: A Leap Towards Energy Sovereignty
Nigeria has officially handed over the headquarters of the African Energy Bank (AEB) in Abuja. This significant development marks a crucial stride toward achieving energy sovereignty for the African continent, as the institution prepares to launch its operations by June 2026.
Ceremony Highlights at the Nigeria International Energy Summit
The ceremony took place during the 9th Nigeria International Energy Summit (NIES). Côte d’Ivoire’s Minister of Mines, Petroleum and Energy, Mamadou Colibaly, who also serves as the president of the African Petroleum Producers’ Organisation (APPO), praised Nigeria’s leadership for facilitating this milestone. He confirmed that the launch of the AEB is aimed for June.
“We are committed to launching this Bank no later than June. I sincerely thank our partners for providing the headquarters and office that make this take-off possible. The African Energy Bank represents Africa’s commitment to finance, develop, and secure its own energy future by Africans, for Africans,” said Colibaly.
The Mission of the African Energy Bank
The AEB is a collaborative effort involving member states of APPO and the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank). Its primary objectives are to:
- Mobilize domestic and regional capital for energy infrastructure projects.
- Reduce Africa’s dependence on external financing.
- Align energy investments with the continent’s long-term development and industrialization goals.
Nigeria’s Commitment and Readiness
During the handover, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, stated, “Nigeria has met every obligation as host. The headquarters is ready, strategically located, and fully equipped, and we are prepared for immediate take-off.”
Strengthening African Energy Independence
This ceremony symbolizes a collective African commitment to harness the continent’s rich natural resources effectively. With tailored financial instruments, the African Energy Bank is set to support projects across the energy value chain, including:
- Exploration and production
- Refining
- Renewable energy integration
- Local content development
The aim is to ensure that Africa’s resources translate into substantial economic benefits and job creation for its people.

Speakers at the event emphasized that the African Energy Bank is more than a financial institution; it is a cornerstone of Africa’s broader quest for economic independence and lasting energy security. The handover signifies the dawn of a new era where Africans are determined to finance, produce, and sustain their energy future.
The AEB aims to strengthen regional energy markets, enhance value addition, and foster sustainable development by improving capital access for energy projects throughout Africa.
