Coca-Cola’s Economic Impact in South Africa for 2024
The Coca-Cola system in South Africa has unveiled a significant R51.2 billion value-added economic impact for the year 2024. This comprehensive study, conducted by the global consulting firm Steward Redqueen, highlights how the Coca-Cola system contributes to the local economy and job creation.
Job Creation and Economic Opportunities
- Supported over 87,000 direct and indirect jobs across various sectors, including retail, agriculture, manufacturing, transport, and services.
- Pumped R25.6 billion into local suppliers, enhancing South African industries and communities.
During a media briefing held by the Honourable Minister of Trade, Industry, and Competition, Mr. Parks Tau, Luis Felipe Avellar, president of the Africa operating unit of The Coca-Cola Company, emphasized the scale of this contribution. He noted, “This new independent study highlights the scale of the Coca-Cola system’s contribution to South Africa’s economy, employment, and communities.”
Local Integration and Sustainable Practices
The Coca-Cola system’s strong local integration stands out, with R25.6 billion spent on goods and services sourced from South African suppliers. This local procurement fosters growth in diverse industries, including sugar production and packaging, reinforcing Coca-Cola’s role as a partner for economic development in South Africa.
Charl Goncalves, Managing Director of Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages, reiterated their commitment to partnerships, stating, “We remain committed to creating opportunity for our people, our partners, and the communities we serve.”
A Long-Standing Presence in Africa
Sunil Gupta, CEO of Coca-Cola Beverages Africa, remarked on South Africa’s strategic importance to Coca-Cola, which began its journey on the continent in 1928. “These findings reaffirm the Coca-Cola system’s role as a key driver of shared value and sustainable growth within the South African economy,” he said.
Continued Investments and Innovations
The Coca-Cola system has reinforced its footprint in the country through various investments and innovations. Notably, a new bottling line has been launched at CCBSA’s manufacturing facility in Midrand, showcasing Coca-Cola’s commitment to local production and distribution.
Environmental Commitment
Beyond economic contributions, Coca-Cola also invests in sustainable initiatives. As part of the Africa Water Stewardship Initiative, the company is contributing nearly $25 million through 2030 to tackle critical water-related challenges in local communities across 20 African countries.
Measuring Economic Impact
The study measures the direct, indirect, and induced economic impacts of the Coca-Cola system in South Africa by combining operational data with third-party economic sources. This analysis illustrates the positive ripple effect of Coca-Cola’s local operations, from farmers growing sugar to retailers selling beverages, thereby creating jobs and generating income opportunities for many South Africans.
