Canada’s New Funding Initiative for Humanitarian and Development Projects
Canada has unveiled a significant funding package amounting to $11.75 million aimed at bolstering humanitarian and development efforts in Kenya and the broader Indo-Pacific region. This initiative was announced by The Honourable Randeep Sarai, Secretary of State (International Development), who underscored Canada’s unwavering commitment to sustainable development, human rights, and economic inclusion.
Major Projects in Focus
The funding includes support for five ongoing projects in Kenya, which have collectively received approximately $3 million in Canadian aid through the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). A highlight of this initiative is the $9.5 million “United to Protect Human Rights” project, which runs from 2026 to 2028. This project aims to enhance the capabilities of human rights defenders across various regions, including East and West Africa, the Middle East, North Africa, and the Indo-Pacific.
Humanitarian Assistance and Food Security
Canada allocated $1.5 million to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to provide lifesaving humanitarian assistance. This support will enable essential services, including shelter, clean water access, healthcare, and livelihood support for refugees and vulnerable groups. Additionally, the World Food Programme (WFP) will receive $500,000 to combat acute food insecurity in Kenya through food distributions and supplemental feeding programs.
Energy and Technology Initiatives
In the energy sector, a $250,000 initiative titled “Kenya Grid Integration Readiness for Future Nuclear Power Development Program” in collaboration with Manitoba Hydro International, aims at strengthening Kenya’s power grid infrastructure. This project focuses on enhancing transmission planning and integrating low-carbon energy sources into the national energy mix.
Moreover, a $250,000 project led by IDRC supports the development of ethical AI policies in Kenya, ensuring that artificial intelligence systems align with human rights considerations. This initiative aims to foster responsible technology governance by engaging policymakers and civil society.
Trade and Economic Inclusion
Trade and economic inclusion are integral aspects of the funding package, with a $1.25 million project designed to promote inclusive trade opportunities via the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). This initiative supports women and youth entrepreneurs across multiple countries, including Kenya, Cameroon, and South Africa.
Climate Finance and Innovation
Additionally, a $600,000 project focuses on enhancing access to clean cooking technologies in Ghana and Kenya, empowering women and mitigating climate risks. Another innovative initiative, a $480,000 project, involves testing drone technology to expedite medical supply delivery in rural Kenya, bolstering healthcare access in remote communities.
Expansion of Clean Electricity Access
Lastly, a $250,000 blended finance initiative aims to enhance access to sustainable electricity for healthcare facilities in Kenya. By attractive private investment via novel financing models, the project aspires to improve healthcare service quality and reliability.
Collectively, these initiatives highlight Canada’s commitment to fostering sustainable development, promoting local partnerships, and addressing urgent global challenges through inclusive strategies.
